Pat Williams | Clare Lions Club & Gleeson Wetlands
When Pat Williams retired he found the time to dedicate to the environmental issues that are close to his heart.
One of those has been the restoration of the Gleeson Wetlands in South Australia.
The Clare Lions Club ‘Green Team’ took over management of the former settlement pond with the co-operation of the local council in 2014 and, in just a few short years, this former barren area has been replanted with thousands of trees, shrubs, and grasses.
This has also seen a return of birdlife and wildlife – a native snake-necked turtle and a nest of eggs are among recent discoveries — and so too the numbers of human visitors — walkers, tourists and bird-watching groups.
Pat has also been keen to involve local children in the work of the ‘Green Team’ and Clare Primary School now has its own dedicated team of ‘Eco Warriors’ who lend a hand.
Pat’s ‘Green Team’ from Clare Lions Club are also helping share information with the community about the problem of single-use plastics and the benefits of bio-degradable products.
