Professor Michael Ibbotson has been the Director of the National Vision Research Institute in Melbourne since 2011.
He did his PhD in the field of visual neuroscience at Queen Mary, University of London, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Australian National University, Canberra.
During his early career he used the insect nervous system to investigate how information about image and body movements were integrated to generate behaviour.
This work led to findings that have assisted in the development of visually guided flight stability systems for autonomous robots – amongst other amazing achievements.
But Professor Ibbotson says simply,
“I want to restore sight to the blind.”
Sometimes, just getting started on the things you want to do to help others need a bit of a hand.
