Lions Drought Relief Update
10 October 2018
- $946,000 has been distributed to drought-stricken communities around Australia
- Lions Clubs across the country are continuing to accept donations to drought relief
- Clubs encouraged to use funds to also support local business in drought areas
The Australian Lions Foundation has this week disbursed an enormous $946,000 to provide immediate relief for families by providing direct support of food, animal fodder, water, clothing, gas, fuel, and essential household needs.
The original donation of $100,000 from the Australian Lions Foundation has been built upon with additional donations of $846,000, thanks to support from Lions Clubs and Districts, as well as generous donations from individuals and corporates.
Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) Chairperson, Tony Benbow OAM, said the funding from the Lions Drought Relief Appeal is already being distributed.
“One of the big differences of this appeal is that Lions are on the ground where the support is needed. The assistance from ALF is immediate, and having a tremendous impact.”
“There have been two disbursements – one at the end of September for $470,000 and this week’s disbursement of the remaining $476,000. We’re aware that Clubs are still supporting this appeal and all funds will be accepted and again disbursed when received.”
Benefit for local businesses
The current drought has had a significant negative impact on local businesses with many having been forced to close.
“Sadly, we have heard of shops and other businesses being forced to close because they’re not being supported, but many families simply have no funds left to make their own purchases.”
“At this point, it’s incredibly important that we provide relief to these families, but one of the things we ask of Lions Clubs is that they purchase items for relief hampers from local businesses and suppliers whenever possible. This may also include providing vouchers for a local independent supermarket or fuel outlet.”
100% of funds donated by the public through fundraising are directed to the project for which they are intended.
Donations can be made through any local Lions Clubs or through the Australian Lions Foundation website www.alf.lions.org.au .
