Hundreds of volunteers and community leaders will be travelling to Canberra in May to attend the Lions 2021 National Convention.
Australia’s largest service organisation’s CEO says the annual convention is an important event for the network and this year will be a particularly exciting one.
“Our annual convention is an important date on the Lions calendar, and we are delighted to be meeting in Canberra this year,” says Lions Australia CEO Rob Oerlemans.
“Our convention is a time to come together to recognise the amazing work of our volunteers and be inspired for the year ahead.”
Lions never stop – they are always amongst the first to offer support when there is a disaster or need in the community and even through the spread of COVID-19, they have continued to help others in the community.
“Like many other organisations COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our organisation. From raffles and BBQS to community service, our volunteers have always been very hands on in the communities. We have been so proud of how our clubs have quickly adapted and continued to go above and beyond for those in need during the health pandemic. Our organisation has really evolved. We look forward to reflecting on this with our members and refocus our energy on projects and fundraising for coming years,” says Rob Oerlemans.
“Lions Australia will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2022. Our clubs will be kickstarting these celebrations in their communities in coming months so this convention one is an important one for our organisation. To be celebrating in the nation’s capital is fantastic!” says Lions Australia CEO Rob Oerlemans.
“The four-day event is also open to the public and we encourage anyone who is interested in finding out more information on Lions or hearing from some inspirational speakers to come along and join us,” adds Rob Oerlemans.
Since the first club was formed in Australia 75 years ago Lions has grown dramatically in size and impact with over 1300 clubs and 30,000 members now giving back through an array of community-based programs and initiatives.
Some Lions are on a mission to cure childhood cancer and diabetes, others are committed to assisting those impacted by drought and floods and many are simply working together to help people in need in their local community. One thing all Lions have in common is together they are making an incredible difference.
Over $50 million is donated to Lions Australia each year with all funds going directly to important causes and people in need. Over $5 million is invested in youth programs each year, over $20 million is invested in medical research, $5 million in drug awareness, $20 million in hearing services and over 3000 environmental projects are carried out by Lions Australia every year.
