Canberra Lions clubs have funded a new 70 bed hostel for school, sports and community groups visiting Canberra. Proceeds from the new accommodation will help Lions to finance programs for kids at risk in the ACT.
Westwood Lodge is set on a 200ha farm in the Tuggeranong Valley just minutes from the National Capital’s tourist attractions. Lions have run the farm for 25 years and in recent times have hosted 5000 young people, teaching them environmental science, sustainable agriculture and animal handling.
The new purpose-built Lodge will offer affordable accommodation and catering to these and other visitors. Amongst the amenities provided at the Lodge are a commercial kitchen, an outdoor BBQ area plus a spacious community room.
The Lodge cost $650 000 with Lions from across the country, the ACT Government, and corporate supporters contributing funds. It is ready for hire and out of town schools have started booking.
The ACT Minister for Tourism Andrew Barr and the Council Chair of Lions Australia Gary Parker will officially launch the Lodge on 20 May 2014.
