Moe Lion Mr Darrell Benjamin OAM has been awarded the prestigious Dame Elspeth Murdoch Award for his volunteer work for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
The Award – named in honour of philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE – was awarded to Mr Benjamin on Sunday 27 October by the Victorian Premier Dr Denis Napthine.
Mr Benjamin, 85, has been fundraising for the Children’s Hospital Appeal since 1978 and to date has raised almost $1million.
In addition to Mr Benjamin’s outstanding fundraising efforts he is a highly active member of the Moe Lions Club, and he is also a group leader for Boy Scouts with disabilities.
This is not the first time that Mr Benjamin has been recognised for his volunteer work having previously been awarded the La Trobe Citizen of the Year Award, and in 2008 he received the Order of Australia for his services to the community.
Part of the award includes $10,000 that will be donated to Mr Benjamin’s chosen charity.
The award was presented at a special event held at Dame Elspeth’s home, Cruden Farm.
