Dick Smith, the eminent businessman, philanthropist, adventurer and entrepreneur, together with his wife Pip Smith, today donated $1 million to the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) to help people in need.
Dick announced the donation saying, “Pip and I consider this donation to be on behalf of the many tens of thousands of hours that are put in by Lions Club members right around Australia and, indeed, the world every year. We respect the work that Lions do and know that this donation will go to those most in need”
The funds will be used to support the Australian Lions Foundation Compassionate Grants Program which helps everyday Australians in crisis. The program funds urgent medical treatment, critical support for people with a disability and crisis services of all descriptions.
Foundation Chairperson, Glen Herbert said, “This wonderful donation will go a long way. Our Lions Clubs already raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for compassionate projects, and grants from this donation, together with local contributions from clubs, business and generous individuals; will mean we can help so many more.”
One of the great strengths of Lions is that 100% of the donation will go where it is need since Lions take no money to cover their administrative costs.
Dick Smith is the Keynote Speaker at the 61st Lions National Convention in Canberra (26-29 April 2013).
He will arrive at 11:00am on Saturday 27 April at the National Convention Centre, Canberra to give his keynote address at 11.30am
