From a life where their thoughts, feelings and needs are held in silence, to a life of interaction, expression and learning, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are now able to communicate thanks to a project spearheaded by the Lions Club of Lugarno and the Autism Community Network. With the support of Lions clubs around Australia, the ASD Kids Communicate project has so far raised $79,000 for iPads and a software package which has assisted 120 non-verbal children with ASD in the Sydney region.
PDG Lugarno Lion Elvio Munzone said that the ability to communicate effectively, which is often a major impairment, presents a real barrier to these children’s ability to learn.
“It also creates significant obstacles to their social and emotional development, as well as their independence.
“Using Proloquo2go software the iPad uses images, sounds, words, and Autism applications that have been shown to assist with communication skills, social communication, language ability and literacy,” PDG Elvio said.
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects approximately 1 in 10 children in Australia. To find out more about the work of the Autism Community Network please visit their website at https://www.autismcommunity.org.au/
